Devereux Scales

The self-titled debut from El Cerrito's Devereux Scales, released through Spiral Jetty in June 2025 — nine songs and a little over half an hour, arriving barely a year after the band coalesced out of a run of long-running East Bay projects.

Matt Lavin and Jeremy Nunes handle guitars and share vocals, with Linda Cleary on synth (a MicroKorg, for the gearheads) and backing vocals, Ben Martin on bass, and Nathan Kondor behind the kit — the one lineup difference from the follow-up, where Pat Toves takes over on drums. It's a record of reverb and patience: "Quillia" opens things in a haze, "Automatic" and "Wring Your Hands" lean into the pulse, and "It Was 1999 When We All Died" and "Do You Really Think They're Out There? Because I Do Too" find the seam where dream pop turns uneasy.

The 4AD and Creation reference points the band cites are audible throughout, though nothing here feels like reenactment — closer to the drift of Slowdive and the jangle of The Sundays than to any of the louder shoegaze revivalists. It picked up a Bandcamp New & Notable nod on release.

Available digitally in 24-bit/96kHz, plus a green 12" vinyl pressing and a CD edition through the band's Bandcamp. Second album Drain to Live followed in March 2026.
