London slowcore band deathcrash has announced their highly anticipated new album Somersaults, set to release on February 27th via untitled (recs). This follows their critically acclaimed studio albums, Return (2022) and Less (2023), and a remix record featuring artists like Water From Your Eyes and Mandy Indiana. The new album arrives at a time when interest in their unique sound is peaking, characterized by a blurry, slow-motion quality, yet imbued with a newfound optimism. While touring with the Jesus and Mary Chain across Europe, the band discovered a freedom in their sound, moving away from the guardedness that previously defined their music. They embraced the idea that their music could convey fragility without being whispered, and intensity without being explosive. This shift in perspective has influenced the recording of Somersaults, which was crafted over four days at Black Box studio in the Loire Valley, where the band enjoyed the simple pleasures of wine, baguettes, and sunshine. The album's title track, 'Somersaults', opens the record with a nostalgic and optimistic tone, showcasing chiming guitars that build to an euphoric refrain. Thematically, the album explores a second coming-of-age period, reflecting on the complexities of growing up and the grief that often accompanies unmet expectations in adulthood. The band’s bassist, Patrick Fitzgerald, describes the song as a symbol of the record, capturing the essence of their journey. As a four-piece band consisting of Noah Bennett, Patrick Fitzgerald, Matthew Weinberger, and Tiernan Banks, deathcrash continues to evolve their sound while maintaining the mysterious energy that has defined their work. Somersaults promises to be a profound exploration of their collective experiences, showcasing their growth as musicians and as individuals.
