NY's Spoils System releases sophomore LP

Spoils System, an indie band hailing from Hudson Valley, New York, is releasing their sophomore LP titled The Nope Out on July 11, 2025 via Sweet Cheetah Records. The band's sound combines shoegaze shimmer and power-pop punch, drawing inspiration from artists like Swervedriver, Death Cab for Cutie, Sunny Day Real Estate and hints of Blinker the Star and No Knife as well. The album also features a collaboration with Failure's drummer, Kellii Scott, on two tracks, adding a unique layer to their music. A perfect balance of melodic, jangly and loud buzzing guitars with quieter atmospheric soundscapes, and big emotive hooks to go with it. Frontman Dan Coutant cut his teeth in 90s emo band Joshua who were signed to Doghouse Records playing shows with bands like The Get Up Kids, Jets to Brazil, At the Drive In and many others from that time. Don't sleep on this one! It's Dan's best work to date and is sure to please fans of the aforementioned bands!

Hudson Valley, New York indie band Spoils System will release their sophomore LP titled The Nope Out via Sweet Cheetah Records on July 11, 2025.

The Nope Out finds the band leveling up the swirl of shoegaze shimmer and power-pop punch —think Swervedriver meets Death Cab or Sunny Day with a hint of Blinker the Star sparkle and the angular indie rock of No Knife. A perfect balance of melodic, buzzing and jangly guitar rock that combines elements of heavy layered guitars and quieter atmospheric soundscapes, with big emotive hooks to go with it. Frontman Dan Coutant came up in the 90s with emo outfit Joshua who were signed to Doghouse Records, and rolled with bands like The Get Up Kids, Jets to Brazil, At the Drive In and several others from that time. Engineered by J. Robbins, Tom Hill (Bookhouse Studio, London), and Paul Carabello, the new album contains 10 brand new tracks of blistering and spacey indie rock and Dan's soothing vocal delivery, and also includes a two-song collaboration with drummer Kellii Scott from the band Failure ("Force For Good" and "Hall of Forgotten Names"). About "Hall of Forgotten Names" Spoils System’s Dan Coutant (vocals/guitar/keys) says, “This song is sort of a weird outlier on the album but it’s become a favorite of the band. Kellii Scott’s (Failure) drumming obviously adds a whole new layer to what we originally intended. For me, this song has some kind of weird ’90s alterna-slacker energy. Kind of like ‘Popular’ by Nada Surf meets ‘Possum Kingdom’ by the Toadies. One of my friends actually said it reminds him of Incubus. Whatever works!”
