Lake Huron

Los Angeles, California's indie rockers Eastern Bleeds released its debut LP titled Lake Huron via Ashtray Monument on August 12, 2025 following a full album stream at PunkNews the day prior. Eastern Bleeds is an indie rock band that channels the sound of bands like Sunny Day Real Estate, Twilight Singers and Hot Snakes. The band was formed by drummer Bob Penn after his previous bands The Jealous Sound and Racquet Club went on hiatus. Penn enlisted the help of a few friends -- guitarist Joe Rivera (Coco B’s, Black Swan Runners), singer Bill Kielty (O Zorn!, Who Rides the Tiger) and bassist Trent Steinbrugge (The Kite Eating Tree) -- to bring the project to life.

What started out as a simple back and forth between Penn and Rivera sending each other demos of song ideas over three years ago has now culminated into Eastern Bleeds' debut album Lake Huron. With the addition of Kielty and Steinbrugge, what was considered just a side project became a complete band and what was just a few simple demos became an album that is sure to turn the heads of discerning rock fans.

Riviera says, "Bob and I got together after the COVID lockdowns and started sharing demos of song ideas we had stored away. Those quickly evolved into full-fledged songs, and we began to realize we might be onto something. We headed into the studio with Paul Miner at Buzzbomb Studios and started laying down the music tracks. At the time, we didn’t have a singer or bassist, so we weren’t quite sure where things would go.

"After a few unsuccessful attempts to find a singer, we turned to our friend Bill. He really connected with the music and was happy to step in. We also brought in Trent to play bass, and once he joined, the songs truly came to life. That’s when we knew we had something special. This project was three years in the making—definitely a labor of love.”

Lake Huron, is a poignant exploration of confinement and the emotional burden of feeling lost. Taking three years to complete, the album weaves together atmospheric soundscapes with rock, infusing elements of psychedelia, new wave, and post-punk.The title serves as a compelling nod to the surreal end days of the pandemic, a time when reality seemed to blur with the bizarre—most notably highlighted by the incident of a spy balloon mistaken for a UFO and shot down over Lake Huron. This backdrop adds a layer of depth to the album, inviting listeners to reflect on the strange and often unsettling intersections of life during unprecedented times.
