Living Room

Brooklyn's Living Room play the type of guitar driven rock combining elements of shoegaze, emo, post-hardcore, post-punk and grunge that harkens back to all things mid/late 90s dark and melodic hook-laden alternative rock. With their latest offering and 4th LP titled "New Years", the band has fine tuned this blend of genres into their most cohesive and catchiest set of songs to date. The 1-2 punch of the opening tracks "Petrol Head" and "Mauve Frame" will immediately draw you in with crunchy and layered guitars, pounding bass lines, big melodies and sing-along hooks that sit somewhere between The Pixies, The Get Up Kids and Balance and Composure. That may sound like an odd combo, but Living Room make it sound seamless. And just when you think it can't get any catchier or more head-bob worthy, track 3 "Flood" kicks in which is Living Room at it's absolute best. This song will make you want to move and demands to be played loud and with the windows down, bringing to mind 90s bands like Hum, Smashing Pumpkins and newer up and coming bands like Narrow Head, Superbloom, Milly and the like. Living Room can hang with any of the new crop of bands heavily influenced by the sounds of the late 90s and early aughts, combining aspects of emo, post-punk, shoegaze and alt-rock and should not be slept on. Furthermore, the quality of the first 3 songs are evident throughout the entire LP, providing consistency and variation over the 10 songs on the album, with varied tempos and levels of loud to quiet parts. Regardless, if the first 3 songs on "New Years" don't draw you in, and especially the single "Flood", I'm not sure what will.
