Originally from the Odessa and Midland areas of Texas, Oakwood has spent the last 10+ years navigating the road between youthful jam sessions, backyard DIY gigs, and the realities of adulthood. Now, over a decade since their first release, the West Texas trio of Mat Dwyer (he/him; vocals/guitar/bass), Noah Roots (he/him; drums), and TJ James (he/him; guitar/bass) return with a new album: Blurred Away, out May 29 on Memory Music. Recorded with Phil Odom (Glare, Militarie Gun, Durry) and mastered by Grammy Award-winning producer Will Yip (Turnstile, Title Fight), the long-awaited full-length draws heavily from the melodic energy of Algernon Cadwallader, Jimmy Eat World, Title Fight, and Jets to Brazil to channel existential dread into something highly cathartic. At its core, Blurred Away is emo in its purest form – a document of survival written in real time, staring directly into the future instead of trying to outrun its complexities. Its charged-up first single, "A Tangled Mess," explores the difference between cautious optimism and nihilism. After releasing their Summer EP over a decade ago, Oakwood slipped into chance obscurity when they let the songs fall off streaming platforms. It wasn’t until 2023-2024 when they re-uploaded everything and began reaching new listeners organically. It culminated in a completely sold out tour that saw them sell over 1200 tickets in Los Angeles alone, proving that chasing nostalgic cash grabs or industry hype isn’t the only way for modern emo bands to find their footing. Oakwood just made music that felt true and fun for them, and eventually, the rest of us caught up.
