Northlane have shared "Crucified," the third single from Anemoia, their seventh studio album, out October 30 via independent release. It follows "Evian" and "CUT_it," and it's the angriest of the three: crushing riffs and raw aggression aimed at how polarized everything has become. It arrives with a visualizer.
"'Crucified' is about the collapse of civil discourse - the way every disagreement now defaults to attack, every conversation becomes a battleground, every difference of opinion ends with someone playing the victim," says frontman Marcus Bridge. "Not only touching on politics, it's about the regression of communication as a whole: arguments online, wars, general difference of opinion. The instinct to go for the throat rather than hear someone out has seeped into every corner of life."
Jordan Fish executive produced Anemoia. The idea for the record came from a set by UK producer and DJ Evian Christ, which pushed guitarist Jon Deiley to work out how trance could sit alongside guitars and heavy music. The result moves between euphoric trance, breakdowns, drum-and-bass, jungle and pop. The title refers to nostalgia for a time or place you've never known. The lighter end of the album includes the Britpop-leaning "Start Again" and the title track, a duet with Dayseeker's Rory Rodriguez. "Crucified" is at the other end.
"There's darkness here, but it's not nihilism - and there's hope, but it's not naivety," Bridge says. "What we made instead is something that feels like it was written by real people living through the same experience as everyone else."
Northlane play their biggest Australian headline run to date in November. From November 28 they support Dayseeker across the UK and Europe, finishing at Amsterdam's Melkweg on December 18. Anemoia is out October 30. Pre-save it here.
