Devereux Scales
Drain to Live
Drain to Live is the second Devereux Scales album and the first made with the full five-piece locked in. Eight songs, tracked in July 2025 at Tiny Telephone in Oakland with engineer Danielle Goldsmith and mastered by Amar Lal at Macro Sound across town.
Matt Lavin and Jeremy Nunes split guitars and vocals, with Ben Martin on bass, Linda Cleary on synth and backing vocals, and Pat Toves on drums. The record lives in the seam between drive and drift: "Fall Forever" and "Magpie" push ahead on a motorik pulse, while "It's Always in My Heart" leans on chiming guitar and an unhurried melancholy that would have sat comfortably on a Creation Records single circa 1990. Opener "Close Your Eyes and Sing!" splits the difference — spacious, and loud when it wants to be.
"This material grapples with feelings of fear and wonderment, anxiety and doubt, and at times it is cynical and fatalistic," said Lavin, who writes the band's lyrics. "And the songs that look outward express dread for an uncertain future, shame at the crassness all around us, and the sense that everyone is just out for themselves."
Four singles led the way across late 2025 and early 2026 — "Fall Forever," "It's Always in My Heart," "Magpie," and finally "Close Your Eyes and Sing!" Digital is up on Bandcamp in 24-bit/96kHz, with vinyl and CD editions shipping from late June 2026.
