Shiner have shared “Two Black Eyes,” the latest track from their upcoming rarities collection The Y Section, due October 9 via Spartan Records.
Recorded in 1998 during the early writing and demo sessions for Starless, the song was originally written by the trio of Allen Epley, Paul Malinowski and Tim Dow and later appeared as an addendum to DeSoto’s re-press of Lula Divinia. The track also helped inspire the title The Y Section, a nod to the band’s habit of adding one more section to a song until someone inevitably asked why it needed to be there.
Following 2025’s excellent BELIEVEYOUME, The Y Section digs back through more than 25 years of Shiner’s catalog for unreleased material, rarities and hard-to-find tracks. “Two Black Eyes” is a great reminder of how much of the band’s signature mix of angular post-hardcore, heavy guitars and hazy melody was already in place by the late ’90s.
