Shiner have shared a heavy, hazy cover of My Bloody Valentine’s “Only Shallow,” the first preview of their newly announced rarities collection, The Y Section.

Due October 9 via Spartan Records, the 10-track set gathers unreleased material and hard-to-find songs from across more than 25 years of the Kansas City band’s catalog. Rather than a traditional greatest-hits collection, The Y Section focuses on the detours, experiments and overlooked tracks that helped shape Shiner’s sound.

The band’s version of “Only Shallow” was recorded and mixed by Paul Malinowski at Westend Studios in 2003 after Shiner had begun closing shows with the My Bloody Valentine classic. “We had been playing ‘Only Shallow’ on tour as a closer — always at the end because who wants to put their stupid songs after this behemoth?” frontman Allen Epley said. “We were prepared and Paul made a killer mix, and that’s what you hear today.”
