Shiner

The Y Section

The Y Section is a career-spanning collection of rarities, unreleased material and hard-to-find tracks from more than 25 years of Shiner. Rather than functioning as a greatest-hits set, the album traces the Kansas City band's detours, experiments and overlooked corners, bringing together material that helps fill in the gaps around its established catalog.

The collection is led by Shiner's heavy, hazy cover of My Bloody Valentine's “Only Shallow.” The track was recorded and mixed by Paul Malinowski at Westend Studios in 2003 after the band had begun using the song as a tour-closing centerpiece. “We had been playing ‘Only Shallow’ on tour as a closer — always at the end because who wants to put their stupid songs after this behemoth?” frontman Allen Epley recalled. “We were prepared and Paul made a killer mix, and that's what you hear today.”

The Y Section arrives October 9, 2026 via Spartan Records.

Shiner Share “Two Black Eyes” From Upcoming Rarities Collection The Y Section

August 28, 2026

Shiner have shared “Two Black Eyes,” the latest track from their upcoming rarities collection The Y Section, due October 9 via Spartan Records.

Recorded in 1998 during the early writing and demo sessions for Starless, the song was originally written by the trio of Allen Epley, Paul Malinowski and Tim Dow and later appeared as an addendum to DeSoto’s re-press of Lula Divinia. The track also helped inspire the title The Y Section, a nod to the band’s habit of adding one more section to a song until someone inevitably asked why it needed to be there.

Following 2025’s excellent BELIEVEYOUME, The Y Section digs back through more than 25 years of Shiner’s catalog for unreleased material, rarities and hard-to-find tracks. “Two Black Eyes” is a great reminder of how much of the band’s signature mix of angular post-hardcore, heavy guitars and hazy melody was already in place by the late ’90s.

SHINER COVER MY BLOODY VALENTINE’S “ONLY SHALLOW” AND ANNOUNCE THE Y SECTION

July 31, 2026

Shiner have shared a heavy, hazy cover of My Bloody Valentine’s “Only Shallow,” the first preview of their newly announced rarities collection, The Y Section.

Due October 9 via Spartan Records, the 10-track set gathers unreleased material and hard-to-find songs from across more than 25 years of the Kansas City band’s catalog. The band’s version of “Only Shallow” was recorded and mixed by Paul Malinowski at Westend Studios in 2003 after Shiner had begun closing shows with the My Bloody Valentine classic. “We had been playing ‘Only Shallow’ on tour as a closer — always at the end because who wants to put their stupid songs after this behemoth?” frontman Allen Epley said. “We were prepared and Paul made a killer mix, and that’s what you hear today.”
